The service is optional and independent. However, US Border Force requires disclosure of all social media platforms and user accounts if you use them. Failure to honestly disclose the social platforms that you use could result in denial of entry to the United States if Social Media accounts are discovered that have not previously been declared.

Border Force checks social media accounts randomly. The defined scope of such a check would be any publicly available posts made by the traveller in the 5 years immediately prior to travelling.

Unlikely. If you do not declare any Social Media accounts that belong to you and the US Border Force discover these accounts, it is highly likely that your attempt to enter the United States will be unsuccessful.

Yes. ANY social media accounts that you use must be declared on the ESTA application form. Border Control may request access to private accounts.

Officers can search using your name, email, or other identifiers. Undisclosed accounts likely result in application rejection.

Yes. Border Control officers could choose to perform online searches for any Social Media accounts that you may have even if you didn't disclose any accounts on the ESTA application form.
